5 Minute Forecast

In North America, the focus of attention this week is on soon to be Hurricane Idalia which will impact parts of Florida and the Southeast during the middle of this week. We expect disruptions to the supply chain (air, road, and rail) along with interruptions in business activity in the areas that will be impacted. Idalia will rapidly gain strength as it moves across the eastern portion of the Gulf of Mexico during the next few days. Landfall is expected during the day on Wednesday on the west coast of Florida north of Tampa Bay toward the Big Bend area of Florida. At landfall, Idalia is expected to be a major hurricane (a Category 3 storm).

In East Asia, Typhoon Saola will disrupt supply chain networks this week. The most significant impacts will be in southern Taiwan, including the Port of Kaohsiung, where typhoon force winds and heavy rainfall will disrupt business operations and transportation coming up the middle portion of this week. After the storm impacts southern Taiwan, it will move on to impact southern China, likely to a lesser degree, over the upcoming weekend. Elsewhere, Europe has one major cargo airport at high risk for disruptions from heavy rainfall/flooding and strong wind gusts – Milan Malpensa Airport in northern Italy. The timing of the highest risk is today and into Tuesday.
